Nickasch and Wettingel Families
GERMAN BOHEMIAN - Falkenau, Boehmen Koenigreich (Bohemia) to Appleton, WI

The NICKASCH  family tree information was compiled by the author of this web though research from the Register of Deeds (Births, Deaths, Marriages), census records, obituaries and other on line sources.  The information follows the family of Antone (Andrew or Andreas Nikasch) Nickasch who was born in 1838 in Horn, Falkenau, Boehmen Koenigreich (Bohemia), Austria.

This family joins another German-Bohemian family from Falkenau Boehmen Koenigreich with the marriage of immigrants Anton Nickasch and Margareth Wettengel Nov 13, 1883 in Appleton, WI.  Both family trees will be presented.

NICKASCH HOMELAND:
We do not know the background for Antone Nickasch but his birth location could indicate he came from what is known as the German-Bohemians.  The web page from
Robert J Paulson, German-Bohemian Heritage Society http://www.svu2000.org/conferences/02.doc provides information about immigration patterns of the German-Bohemians to Wisconsin  A portion of the text reads:

Even though there were a large number of Czechs who went to Wisconsin from Bohemia, there was another group of Bohemian immigrants who came at the same time and for the same reasons.  They too loved to drink "pivo" but they called it "Bier". They loved to eat sauerkraut, pork and knefliks but they called the dumplings Knoedl. They made a coffeecake with cottage cheese, prunes and apples or almonds. They did not eat kolaches but schmierkuchen. They loved to dance the polka and enjoyed a good time. They had their homes in the same area of Bohemia where in many cases they were neighbors in the same villages.  Some of them even had Czech sounding names.  The main difference was in their language. They spoke a dialect of German called Bhmisch. They were the German-Bohemians, the Deutschbhme. They came to Wisconsin from the Bhmerwald (Sumava), the South Egerland (Cesky Les), and from Falkenau (Sokolov).  These areas later came to be known as the Sudetenland, a term that was unsown to these 19th century immigrants.

...A group of these "Border People" coming from the villages of the Sumava and from the villages stretching from south of (Taus) Domazlice to Neuern (Nyrsko) settled in the small towns near Green Bay, Wisconsin and later along the Wisconsin Central railroad in towns stretching from the Wisconsin to the Chippewa Rivers, from Stevens Point to Chippewa Falls.  These were the lumberman farmers, descendants of the Free Farmers who were given land and special privileges by the Dukes of Bohemia to protect the border areas.  These border settlers, along with  their Czech cousins, became known as the Choden (Chodsko).  They joined with their Czech neighbors in a rebellion led by the fabled Kosina against the hated repression of landlord Lamigen....

Beginning in the 1850s a sizable immigration occurred from the Falkenau (Sokolov) district located on the Eger (Cheb) river midway between Eger (Cheb) and Karlsbad (Karlovy Vary) to Wisconsin to the city of Milwaukee.  By 1855 already 23 percent of the names from the Falkenau district appear also in Milwaukee city directories.  From the early days of immigration the German Bohemians tended to settle near the central business district near the present-day downtown and "East town".  There were a large number of rooming houses in this area providing temporary housing near the businesses and factories.  They were also a few known German-Bohemian shopkeepers located in the business center of this area....

...The German Bohemians almost became a lost people.  It is extremely difficult to track their life in America.  Few archives recognize the existence of the German-Bohemians as a distinct cultural group.  Usually they are lumped together with other nationalities.  Some census-takers listed them as Austrian, since their homeland was under the rule of the Austrian Empire when they immigrated.  Some were labeled as German because of the language they spoke.  Still others were called Bohemians, a term which hardly distinguished them from their Czech neighbors.  In fact, in the 1905 Minnesota census, Brown County, the home of the most German Bohemians in Minnesota, was noted to have the second-largest Czech population in the state, when in fact there were only two Czech speaking families in the County.  Not until the 1920s census were the Bhmish listed as German speakers from Bohemia.

It is unknown if Antone Nickasch (Sr) ever came to the United States. His son Antone (1862-1949) appears to be first to immigrate in this family. He came at the age of 17 on the "Main" from Bremen, Germany in1880 and lists his occupation as a workman.

Stevens Point, WI 54481 715-346-4992 Nancy Day, a Neenah-Menasha Arbor Day Committee member, put it this way in a 1992 magazine story: He wanted to empower youth to protect the environment and show that tree planting was just one simple way kids could take concrete steps to make their world better. Leo put it in his own words when asked to comment about environmental education for elementary and middle school students. Thats the ideal time to get em. Once we get themtheyre good for the rest of their lives. He pushed for changes in state law to address environmental issues, supported environmental education centers for the young and advocated for making public lands readily available to the people. I dont believe anyone needs recreation areas more than the working class, he said in a newspaper interview. His long list of admirers includes state politicians, conservation professionals and union colleagues. Bob Ellingson, a retired DNR employee who worked with Nickasch for 20-plus years, put it this way: Hes not afraid to tackle anything, no matter what the issue isHes done far more as a volunteer and interested citizen than any professional has. Leo Nickasch is a shining example of a citizen conservationist who cared enough to make a difference. Burial: Appleton Higland Park Memorial Cemetery, Appleton, WI (Source: deaths, Outagame County, WI, V41 p 236.)
Cause of Death: Myodarditis, contributary senility, insanity (Source: deaths, Outagame County, WI, V 41 p 236.)
Census: 1900, Winnebago Mental Health Hospital - Kids in orphanage (Source: 1900 Census, WI https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/MM2T-FSK.)

Mary had 5 children.  After the birth of her last child, Rose Wettengel in 1897 she appeared to have suffered some emotional problems.  In the 1900 census Mary was located in the local mental health hospital (Winnebago Mental Health, Oshkosh, WI) and Anton seems to have given up custody of their children.  The kids appear in an orphanage in 1900 and 1905.  For some reason Celia was shown with her Grandparens and Anton in the 1910 census.  Anton was not listed as the father, but his father was listed as Grandfather (likely because parental rights had been given up).  Mary appears to be back in the community by 1920.  It is hard to say if there could have been some post partum depression or another issue which led to her stay at Winnebago MHH.

He pushed for changes in state law to address envi-ronmental issues, supported environmental education centers for the young and advocated for making public lands readily available to the people. I dont believe anyone needs rec-reation areas more than the working class, he said in a newspaper interview. His long list of admirers includes state politicians, conservation professionals and union colleagues. Bob El-lingson, a retired DNR employee who worked with Nickasch for 20-plus years, put it this way: Hes not afraid to tackle anything, no matter what the issue isHes done far more as a volunteer and interested citizen than any pro-fessional has. Leo Nickasch is a shining example of a citizen con-servationist who cared enough to make a difference. Celias mother was Mary Tuscherer. The kids appear in a Brown Co, WI  orphanage in 1900 and 1905.  For some reason Celia was shown with her Grandparents and Anton in the 1910 census.  Anton was not listed as the father, but his father was listed as Grandfather (likely because parental rights had been given up).  Mary appears to be back in the community by 1920.  It is hard to say if there could have been some post partum depression or another issue which led to her stay at Winnebago MHH.

Schucknecht, Evelyn Myrtle  Nee Kruse

(Mrs. Wilbert Schucknecht)
God called Evelyn into open loving arms peacefully on Thursday, December 27, 2007 with her family present at Theda Clark Medical Center.

Evelyn was born January 2, 1922, in Appleton, the daughter of George Theodore and Celia Marie (Wettengel) Kruse. She was raised by her step father Jerome Frye and her Mom. They resided in the Shiocton area, Green Bay, and Appleton. She lived in Appleton most of her life. Evelyn enjoyed both farm and city life. She worked at Zwicker Knitting Mills and at Scoldy Lox, a Scolding Locks Hair Pin Corporation. After a five year courtship, she was united in marriage to Wilbert Schucknecht on June 8, 1946, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Appleton.

Early Evelyn and Wilbert enjoyed playing Sheepshead, dancing at the Cinderella, Pierce Park's annual 4th of July celebration, gardening, roses, and being with family, relatives and friends.

Mom worked cleaning houses and at night she and Wilbert cleaned offices. She was a hard worker. Mom said she was the happiest and felt the best when she was with child. They were blessed with two children.

Proverbs 31:28-Her children arise and call her blessed. First Corinthians 13:4-7 described Mom the best-Love is patient, love is kind.

Love of her family was so strong. We sensed she knew something when one of her last sentences was "I am afraid to go to bed-I don't want to go to sleep and die-I am old. I won't see you anymore. You're such nice kids".

Mom, you were our best friend, our Matriarch. As long as we can remember you made sure we had three meals a day together. You were an excellent cook, canner and baker. We loved your canned pickled beets, ground cherries and jams. When we were sick you were always at our bedside. We returned the favor when you were ill. You were frugal too, knowing just what to spend to get the groceries needed to make a fine meal.

After Dad passed in 1984 we became even more close. Mom you always had advice and support for our worries and fears. You went along with Ken and Marilyn to steam engine and horse shows.

Mom loved going to church and out to eat, car day trips and picnics. She liked to have fun and get out of the house, even to go for ice cream.

Mom helped us with everything-doing what she could. She was always giving something to somebody; a rose, tomatoes or vegetables from the garden, canned goods or a jar of homemade jam. She taught us to give.

The last few years Mom battled with many health concerns. She went through several foot surgeries, cancer radiation and saw many, many doctors. Last December when the doctors said she would die, she rallied and fooled them all. They called her amazing! She'd said she wanted to get well and go to church and by God she attended church that next Sunday, and every Sunday after for almost a year. This past December 16th was the last service she attended. She told us she so enjoyed seeing both pastors and everybody else at church.

Her favorite TV shows were Regis, Little House on the Prairie, the Price is Right with Bob Barker and Jeopardy. She also loved watching movies with us. She enjoyed reading and her mind was always sharp.

Her last month was in a care center and she enjoyed playing bingo, Wii video bowling, spending Thanksgiving with us and Abby, attending a Christmas music program, and walks "around the gym" as how she decribed therapy. She told us it felt good to walk again.

Evelyn will be missed by Marilyn, Kenneth, pets Jubilee and Abby, many nieces and nephews, good friends and neighbors.

Mom will join others who have passed, her parents George and Celia, her stepfathers, Jerome Frye and August Roloff, husband Wilbert, sister, Marie (Harry, Sr.) Vanden Bush, her father and mother-in-law, Edward and Ida (Korth)

Schucknecht, brothers and sisters-in-law, Harry and Mathilda, Harvey and Edith, Clarence and Gertrude, and Esther Schucknecht; Hilda Peotter Berndt, and pets, Pepita and Scotty, and many others.

Mom was a faithful member of Trinity Lutheran Church since 1952. She even enjoyed a special chilly Christmas Eve service in a stable.

Funeral services for Evelyn will be at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, December 30, 2007, at TRINITY LUTHERAN CHURCH ELCA, 209 South Allen Street, with Revs. Kurt and Mary Beth Kovanen officiating. Visitation will begin at 1:00 p.m. Sunday until the time of services directly at the church. Graveside committal services will be at 10:00 a.m. Monday, Dec. 31, at Appleton Highland Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorials in Evelyn's name may be sent to Trinity Lutheran Church.

Many thanks to the doctors, nurses, health care providers, hospitals, care centers, and therapists who helped Mom over the years.

Love you Mom. We will miss you too! See you in Heaven! Marilyn and Kenneth
