He was born Aug. 29, 1921, in Manitowoc, son of the late Anton and Anna (Prokash) Mauer. As a teenager, Bob joined the Billy Schultz Circus based in Manitowoc. Perfecting his acrobatic act, Bob advanced to performing in the center ring of the famous Ringling Brothers Circus during a tour by train covering the years of 1940-41. The tour included stops in Los Angeles and a one-month engagement at Madison Square Garden in New York. The advent of World War II ended Bob's circus career and he enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1942, serving for 44 months aboard the destroyer U.S.S. Bob returned to Manitowoc after the war, and began working as a machinist at Lakeside Machine. On July 18, 1959, he married his wife of 46 years, the former Arlene Blahnik, at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Manitowoc. Bob shared his acrobatic talents often with local youth, teaching aspiring gymnasts at Lincoln High School and the Manitowoc YMCA. Bob retired from Lakeside Machine in 1986 after 38 years of service to the company. During his retirement, Bob enjoyed finding antique bargains at garage sales, discussing world events with friends at Copps, and competing at cards with his fellow members of the Royal Flush card club. Bob and Arlene also traveled to several reunions of the U.S.S. Ralph Talbot crew throughout the United States. Bob especially treasured following the academic and athletic careers of his granddaughters: Alyssa and Chelsea. Bob became the biggest fan of the St. Louis College of Pharmacy volleyball team and the Roncalli Lady Jets basketball team, providing love and encouragement from the sidelines. Survivors include his wife: Arlene Mauer, Manitowoc; a son and daughter-in-law: Robert M. Jr. and Betty J. Mauer, Henderson, Nev.; a daughter and son-in-law: Mary and Gene Stangel, Manitowoc; two granddaughters: Alyssa Stangel, St. Louis; Chelsea Stangel, Manitowoc; three step-grandsons: Matt and Chris Willing, Pahrump, Nev.; Nick Willing, Idaho Falls, Idaho; one great-step-granddaughter: Rebecca Willing, Idaho Falls, Idaho, and six sisters-in-law: Lorraine Cotter, Manitowoc; Ellie Obry and her husband, Marvin, Hortonville; Grace Witte and her husband, Don, Green Bay; Bernice Anhalt, Manitowoc; Elsie Blahnik, Menominee Falls, and JoAnne Mauer, Manitowoc. He was also preceded in death by a brother: James Mauer; a sister and brother-in-law: Hazel and Pat Pozorski; and three brothers-in-law: Edward Cotter, Robert Anhalt and John Blahnik. The family will greet relatives and friends at The Pfeffer Funeral Home & Cremation Care Center, Manitowoc, from 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday, March 5, 2006, where a prayer service will conclude the visitation at 7 p.m. led by Deacon Rich Bahnaman. Friends may also call Monday morning at St. Francis of Assisi on Marshall, Manitowoc, from 10 a.m., until the time of service at 11 a.m. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, March 6, 2006, at St Francis of Assisi on Marshall, Manitowoc.
