Soukup Coat of Arms / Soukup Family CrestThis Czech surname of SOUKUP was an occupational name for a merchant or dealer. The name was derived from the Czech word SOUKUP, from the Slavonic SOU + KUP - meaning to buy. The word also acquired the sense 'one who aids or abets a thief'. The earliest merchants were the itinerant pedlars who carried their stock of goods strapped to their backs. They called upon castles, manor houses and cottages. They often congregated at the church on Sundays to exhibit their wares. The king exercised the power of licensing the right to hold a fair or market which was profitable to the lord and trader alike. The more established traders were attracted to the larger cities, where they grew wealthy and became respected citizens. There were many traders and merchants during medieval times because usually the man who made the article or grew the crop was the dealer. William Josef SOUKOP, born on the 5th January, 1907, the son of Karl and Joseph SOUKOP, has been the Master of Sculpture, Royal Academy Schools since 1969. His work is in many private collections in England, America, Canada and Europe. He was awarded the Archibald McIndoe Award in 1964. The modern state of Czechoslovakia is going through a transitional phase as a result of the fall of the Iron Curtain. Its various regions encompassed the medieval provinces of Bohemia, Moravia, and Slovakia. The first two of these, where the language properly called Czech is spoken, were heavily subject to German cultural and linguistic influence from the Middle Ages onwards, being administratively a Crownland of Austria for much of the time until independence in 1918. This influence is reflected in the many Czech surnames derived from German, both from given names, and from vocabulary words. Occupational names are quite common in Czech as are nicknames, especially those referring to some physical feature. Many of the most common Czech surnames have the diminutive ending 'CEK', which is often found attached to these names.
