Wisconsin, USA May 30, 1927 - November 7, 2010Gladys A. Blahnik, age 83, of Rhinelander, died peacefully on Sunday, November 7, 2010 at her home surrounded by her loving family. She was born May 30, 1927 in Antigo, the daughter of Frank and Mathilda (Chadek) Bunda. Gladys married Melvin Blahnik on July 3, 1948 in Rhinelander. For many years, she worked at the chip plant, but it was her caring for young children that was most meaningful for her. She began watching her own two grandchildren, but that expanded to caring for the children from other families as well. Gladys enjoyed the outdoors; camping, boating, fishing, and snowmobiling. She and her husband were very proud of their worldwide travels. Melvin occasionally played with the Jerry Goetsch Orchestra, and the couple toured around the world with the band. Gladys was extremely grateful to Cindy and Bruce Butterfield, Jessica Blahnik, Ryan Blahnik, and Angela Lund for their loving care.She is survived by her children, Sandy Blahnik, Wausau; Vonnie (George Buck) Blahnik, Luxemburg, WI; Dr. Martin (Jenny) Blahnik, Las Vegas; and Randy Blahnik, Oshkosh; sixteen grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, and much extended family and friends.In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin, a daughter, Sherry, and two sons, Gary and Ron.A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, November 9, 2010 at 12:00 P.M. at Nativity of Our Lord Catholic Church-St. Joseph's Site with Father Jeremiah Worman officiating. Interment will follow in St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church on Tuesday morning. Mercedes Elda Blahnik, 86, of Sturgeon Bay, went to be with the Lord late Saturday night, August 3, 2013, at the Skilled Nursing Facility of Ministry Door County Medical Center, surrounded by her loving family.
She was born June 14, 1927, in Sevastopol, the daughter of the late Richard and Florence (Werkheiser) Ash. Mercedes graduated from Sevastopol High School in 1945. She was united in marriage to Norman Bink in Sturgeon Bay in 1951. They shared 30 years together. Norman died May 28, 1981. Mercedes worked at Bay Style Shop and later as a cook at the Senior Center. In 1988, Mercedes married Ralph Blahnik at Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Sturgeon Bay. He preceded her in death on April 3, 2009. Mercedes gardened at Blahnik's "Glad Acres" in Little Sturgeon Bay - and every Saturday at the Sturgeon Bay Farm Market up until 2005.
Mercedes was a member of St. Peters Lutheran Church in Sturgeon Bay for over 50 years. During her life, she enjoyed knitting, crocheting, and gardening. Mercedes liked playing sheepshead, especially with her card-playing group, Gert Cihlar, Nick Freimuth and Paul Schmitt.
She will be deeply missed by her son, Keith (Mary) Bink; daughter, Beth (Tim) Jeurink; two granddaughters, Gretchen (Tyler) Torstenson, Rachel (Kirk Wilke) Bink; (all of Sturgeon Bay); two great-grandchildren, Tryston, Reagen; step-children, Darlene (Emil) Scheidecker of Sturgeon Bay, Suzie (Tom) Weidner of Brussels, Roland (Marie) Blahnik of Louisville, KY, Jeanne (Richard) Klotz of Sturgeon Bay, Leeann Sprifke of Forestville; step-grandchildren; step-great-grandchildren; sister, Sylvia Londo of Carlsville; sister-in-law, Dorothy Ash of Sturgeon Bay; and other friends.
Mercedes was welcomed Home by her parents; two husbands; three brothers, Virgil (Evelyn) Ash, Chester (Helen) Ash, Gordon John Ash; sister, Julia (Forest) Hanson; and brother-in-law, Darold Londo.
A funeral service honoring and celebrating Mercedes' life will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, August 7, 2013, at St. Peters Lutheran Church with Rev. Darrick Kolterjahn officiating. Burial will be in Bayside Cemetery.
Friends may call at the church from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service at 11:00 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given in Mercedes' name to St. Peters Lutheran School
