Obituary collected by Bob BlahnikWelnick, Miss Genevieve M.
November 19, 2010
Miss Genevieve M. Welnick, 104, Algoma, died Wednesday, Nov. 17, 2010, at the Algoma Long Term Care Unit. She was born in Algoma, Wis., on May 21, 1906, a daughter of the late Vladish C. Welnick and Ann (Blahnik) Welnick. She lived in Algoma all of her life.
Genevieve was a graduate of the Door-Kewaunee Normal School, Milwaukee State University, and received her Bachelor of Science degree from St.. Norbert College, De Pere. She did postgraduate work at the Oshkosh University and correspondence from Loyola University of Chicago.
She was dedicated to teaching. Her 45-year teaching career included schools in Door-Kewaunee counties, Elkhart Lake, St. Mary, Algoma, Menomonee Falls and Green Bay.
Children readily responded to her teaching methods, and many of her pupils chose the teaching profession. She was a staunch believer in parent involvement in a child's primary learning foundation and parents and teachers were invited to observe and enjoy pupil participation and assist when the need arose. The children were given a gift that lasts a lifetime - a love for reading and learning.
Her interests included reading - especially poetry, which she read publicly on various occasions; playing cards, playing the piano, musicals and the theater. Many evenings during the war she helped make bandages and knit helmets for the soldiers. She traveled during the summer vacation and worked at Beach's Variety Store and Gift Shop in Algoma.
She was a member of St. Mary Parish, Rosary Society, the "New Life Choir", church Lector, Door-Kewaunee Retired Teachers, State and National Association of Retired Teachers, Kewaunee County Historical Society, Algoma Memorial Medical Auxiliary and volunteered at the gift shop in the medical center and she served as an Algoma City "Poll" worker.
Survivors include two nieces, Kathryn (Kitty) Fulwiler, Brussels; Patty Jindra, Brookfield; three nephews, Douglas (Terri) Jorns, Sturgeon Bay; Dr.Richard (Kathy) Welnick, Madison, and Bill (Pat) Fell, Oshkosh; and many grand-nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, five sisters and two brothers.
Friends are invited to call at St. Mary Catholic Church, Algoma, from 10 a.m. until the Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 20, with Rev. Bill Swichtenberg officiating. Burial in the church cemetery.
Family and friends may sign the online guest book at www.schinderle.com.
The family wants to extend their heartfelt thanks to the entire staff at the Algoma Long Term Care Unit for all the care and kindness given to Genevieve during her stay there.
The Schinderle Funeral Home, Algoma, assisted the family with arrangements.
