ANTIGO MILITIA LEAGUE. The Antigo Militia League was organized April 18, 1917, two weeks after war was declared. Henry Hay was elected President; Edward Cody, Vice President; Fred L. Berner, Secretary, and J. C. Lewis, Treasurer. The object of the league was to promote the organization of an Antigo military unit; to give moral and financial aid to the unit in its embryo stages. An executive committee consisting of G. J. Quigley, R. B. Johns, S. B. UUman, Fred L. Berner, and John Hanousek, was appointed. The Antigo Militia League applied for state aid for an armory under the Wilcox Law after John Hanousek, a member of the executive committee, purchased the Antigo Opera House and presented it to the city for an armory. This work, together with a great patriotic meeting. May 16, 1917, when Col. Guy D. Goff and General Charles King spoke and the organization of Company "G," 4th Wis- consin Regiment, practically completed the purpose of the Militia League. The Antigo Militia League performed a commend- able service in an anxious time in the history of Langlade County. CITIZENS' TRAINING CAMP. The Antigo Citizens' Training Camp, a home military unit, recognized in war on an equal status with the state militia, was organized October 26, 1917. A Board of Governors consisting of C. J. TeSelle, James Cody, S. B. UUman, J. D. Mylrea, and Fred L. Berner was appointed. J. D. Mylrea was elected Captain, C. J. TeSelle, 1st Lieutenant, and Edward Faust, 2nd Lieutenant of the unit. Captain Mylrea resigned shortly after his selection. C. J. TeSelle then became Captain, Edward Faust, 1st Lieutenant, and Charles Cody, 2nd Lieutenant. The Citizens' Training Camp drilled regularly and performed a service of importance at home. The or- ganization took its oath and was inspected by a representative of the Adjutant General. No definite termination was made of the home guards, as they were called. Drill ceased when war ended. ORIGINAL ROSTER OF THE 107TH TRENCH MORTAR BATTERY AS COMPANY "G" 4TH WISCONSIN INFANTRY. Submitted by Bob Blahnik HOLZMER: Newspaper Obituary and Death Notice
Press of Atlantic City, The (NJ) - Thursday, January 3, 2002
Deceased Name: HOLZMER
HOLZMER, DWIGHT A. (Buz), 81, of North Cape May, died on December 31, 2001. Following his recently departed wife of 54 years, Marian, he passed peacefully after an extended illness with his family at his side. Born in 1920 in International Falls, Minnesota, Buz (as he was known to everyone close to him) served his country from 1942 to 1946 as a First Sergeant in the United States Army 3801st Quarter Master Truck Company. Until the very end of his life he cherished the memories of that time often sharing with family and friends the hundreds of photographs he took documenting both the devastation and valiant comradery of America's war effort in Europe. After an honorable discharge, he settled briefly in Milwaukee, WI, where he met his life-long companion Marian (nee Blahnik). Shortly after their marriage, the couple moved to Philadelphia where they had their first two children while Buz worked as a deliveryman for Freihofer's Bakery. During the 1950's the Holzmer family relocated to North Cape May and Mr. Holzmer, switching from bread to milk, began driving a delivery truck for Abbott's Dairy out of Wildwood. Later, during the early part of the 1960's, Buz worked for the Villas Lumber Company before going to work for the newly-opened Handyman Haven in North Cape May. Through hard work and entrepreneurial vision, in 1968 he was able to purchase that business where, for the next 33 years Buz and Marian's diligence and tireless dedication helped establish that business as a respected and beloved fixture throughout Lower Township. It was only after more than 20 years in business that Buz began to indulge himself in the weekly luxury of a day off. And to this day, almost every long-time resident of Lower Township has at least one story of how Buz, with his characteristic gentle manner and a good-nature gleam in his eye, helped them easily solve a bedeviling home repair problem of one sort or another, with no extra charge for the advice and/or humorous stories. Besides being one of the early members of the Town Bank Volunteer Fire Company, Buz was, until his passing, a founding member of the Lower Township Rotary Club. In his later years his passions, which were many, included fishing, aviation and frequent trips to the casinos. Surviving are his children, Allyn of Villas, Sharon and husband Brayton Nye of Edgewater, FL, David and wife Kitty of Green Creek, Craig of Collingswood and Joe of Lower Township; a brother, Ross Holzmer of Fargo, ND, three sisters, Willow Mossberg of Cumberland, WI, Jacquelyn Runyan of Springfield, OH and Diane Magnuson of Proctor, MN, and a grandson, Sean Holzmer of Cockeysville, MD. There will be a viewing from 10am - 11am on Saturday, January 5 at Evoy's Funeral Home in North Cape May, followed by a short service to honor both Buz and his wife Marian, who also passed recently on December 5. Burial will be at the Cape May County Veteran's Cemetery at Crest Haven.
