Mary Leora Jarman
October 15, 2008 Mary Leora Jarman, 95, Fish Creek, passed away Sunday, October 12, 2008 at Scandia Village in Sister Bay.She was born May 28, 1913, in Springfield, Mo. to Cleveland and Mary Ann (McCameron) Shepard. Leora grew up in Thayer, Mo. with three brothers and two sisters, who preceded her in death.Leora left home at age fourteen to make her way in the world as a hired girl in her hometown and later as a cook for St. Louis and Chicago families that summered in Door County. That was how a girl from the Ozarks came to meet and marry a boy from Door County.Oct. 8, 1938, Leora married Glen Jarman at Bethany Lutheran Church, Ephraim in a double wedding ceremony with Earl and Estelle (Johnson) Jarman. Glen preceded her in death in 1973.Church involvement and community service were the watchwords of Leora's life. At various times she was Sunday School Superintendent and Ladies Aid President at Community Church in Fish Creek, President of Fish Creek Woman's Club and the Door County Federation of Woman's Clubs, President of Church Women United and a member of The Door County Natural Beauty Council. As a business woman, she owned and operated the Bayou Cottages and Fish Creek Motel. She was engaged actively in Fish Creek Civic Club, designing elaborate floats for Peninsula Day parades and making hundreds of evergreen wreaths for club fundraising. In 1976 she was named Fish Creek's "Distinguished Citizen-of-the-Year". As a member of the Door County Chamber of Commerce, she volunteered for many years to help staff the chamber's booth promoting tourism at the Milwaukee and Chicago sports shows along with her friend, Chief Roy Oshkosh. As a "founding mother" of Scandia Village, Leora served on the board that established the Northern Door non-profit complex that served as her home the last thirteen years. Leora's family thank publicly the entire staff of Scandia Village for their incredibly loving and compassionate care.Leora is survived by a son, Glenn Edward (Linda) Jarman, Fish Creek; three daughters, Mary Ann (Joel) Blahnik, Fish Creek, Sue (Russell "Skip") Kaeske, Hales Corners, and Betty (Russ) Adelson, Fresno, Calif. She is also survived by one grandson, Jon (Christianna) Blahnik, Sturgeon Bay; and six granddaughters, Elizabeth "Betsy" (Matt) Kuhn, Hilbert, Jennifer Blahnik, Baileys Harbor, Chelsea (Nick) Mittermann, St. Paul, Minn., Kendra Adelson, Santa Cruz, Calif., Danen Adelson, Berkeley, Calif. and Marne Kaeske, Duluth, Minn.; five great-grandchildren, Connor, Makaylee, Candence Kuhn, as well as Jackson and Madeline Blahnik.A memorial service celebrating Leora's life will be held Monday, Oct. 20th., 1:00 at Community Church of Fish Creek with Rev. Delmar Dahl officiating. A time of fellowship, remembrance, and refreshments will follow the service. Internment will be at Blossomburg Cemetery in Peninsula State Park. Casperson Funeral Home, Sister Bay, is assisting with arrangements. Online condolences at www.caspersonfuneralhome.comIn lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Scandia Village Good Samaritian, 10560 Applewood Rd., Sister Bay, WI 54234A fitting epitaph is the prayer Leora wrote that continues to be used at SCAND Auxiliary events:"O Lord of all, guide us with Thy wisdom to strive a little harder for those who need help. Keep us cheerful and willing to think of others more and ourselves less. May we always do what is right and serve where we are needed. Amen."
