Obit from Mike GlimeStacey Vorpahl - Green Bay Press Gazette October 12, 2004 Vorpahl, Stacey Lynn Stacey Lynn Vorpahl, 19, Fort Atkinson, died peacefully at home on Saturday, Oct. 9, 2004, surrounded by family and friends. Many have followed Stacey?s story in the media through the years. Stacey, a vivacious redhead with a joy for life and a never-ending smile, was born in Madison on Jan. 3, 1985. She started out in life just like any other child. An enlarged spleen was discovered at age 2, which led to a diagnosis of Niemann-Pick Type C Disease. This rare metabolic disease, which results in deterioration of the central nervous system, struck in full force by the age of 7 with the first onset of seizures. By 8, Stacey was no longer walking or talking. By age 9, she had lost her ability to swallow, leading to a feeding tube, and chronic respiratory complications. The disease continued its steady progression with Stacey requiring total care to make her comfortable in her final years. Despite all her suffering, Stacey continued to inspire us all with her tremendous spirit, her joy for life and her contagious smile. Stacey touched many people in her short life, motivating her parents to join with others to establish the National Niemann-Pick Disease Foundation bringing together families around the world suffering from this rare disorder, offering hope for a cure. Even in her death, Stacey continued to give with a donation of her brain and tissue for research. She is a true hero! Stacey is survived by her parents, Gary and Barb (Glime) Vorpahl, Fort Atkinson; her sister, Kimberly Vorpahl, Madison; maternal grandparents, George and Marion Glime, Lena; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, friends and caregivers. Her paternal grandparents, Norman and Deloris Vorpahl of Collins, Wis., preceded her in death. Funeral services will be held at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Fort Atkinson on Thursday, Oct. 14, at 5 p.m. with the Rev. Chris Buckingham Taylor officiating.Visitation will be held prior to the service, beginning at 2 p.m. A private graveside ceremony will be held on Friday, Oct. 15. In lieu of flowers, the family asks we help save other children from this rare disorder by making a donation in her name to the National Niemann-Pick Disease Foundation (NNPDF), 415 Madison Ave., Fort Atkinson, WI 53538, www.nnpdf.org. Some people come into our lives and quickly go. Some people move our souls to dance. They awaken us to a new understanding With the passing whisper of their wisdom. Some people make the sky more beautiful to gaze upon. They stay in our lives for awhile Leave footprints on our hearts, And we will never, ever be the same. Dunlap Memorial Home is assisting the family.
