From Dorothy Janca 3/23/11
Hi Lori,
Yes, I do have these documents. Vaclav (James) first went to Bessemer in UP Michigan and worked on setting railroad ties, I believe. He said until the "Deigo's ( sorry for the politically incorrect for Italians) would work for 5 cents less" . He was there with his Halama relatives. Uncle Jacob Halama, as I recall who is listed on the Ellis Island info, and cousins Frank and ?forgot? These Halama men later died in a boating accident around Halloween 1930 on Lake Gogebic. It was a big deal because 3 generations of Halama men died inc. an 11 year old boy. I think 7 died, some friends of the family all together. Boat was overloaded and they wore wool clothing that pulled them down.At some point 1914-16 Vaclav went to Chicago where his sister Agnes Halama Kleisner and her husband lived. He stayed with them and worked carpentry until he met my grandmother Marie Vichr. She was born in Chicago, but only 2-3 months after her parents came to US, but she never let anyone forget she was American born. He says SHE asked him to marry her. He was doing some work on a boarding house her mother, a widow, and sisters ran. There were 2 properties on Trumbull Ave. by th 1930's.
Both of my grandparents died in Phoenix--Maricopa Co., she in December1969 and he in June 1983, as did my mother Lucille Halama Janca in July 1972. My dad Stanley John Janca died in Arkansas in March 2009 as I recall. We all came to AZ by car--used to come for the summers 1956-59 because I was allergic to just about everything blooming in the Illinois summer. Finally in 1959 we moved here, my grandfather retired and came here and my aunt Margie Halama Stepanek and family too. Aunt Margie died in 1965 of a brain tumor. Only my aunt Florence Halama Hlavacek Wielgus and family stayed in Illinois. One cousin, Jerry Stepanek whom I never see is still here along with me. My brother Tim is in California, the Halvacek cousins in Illinois and their 3 kids each, kind of scattered around right now--Washington DC, New York, and Illinois.I was born at the Berwyn McNeil Memorial Hospital which was across from the Moose lodge, near the train tracks from downtown Chicago. We lived in Berwyn, 1447 S. Scoville Ave and before that with my grandfather who owned the building at 1926 S. Oak Park Ave in Berwyn. My Dad had a jewelry and watch repair business on Cermak Rd--6804 1/2 W. Cermak ()I think) --not far from the Olympic theater. Later it was located on Cermak Rd, about 3 doors down from the intersectrion with Oak Park Ave. on the North and west side. There was a nice old bank across the street, that I think Berwyn was trying to keep as an historical building and it was down the street, and across from the old location of Weber Travel Agency. My aunt Florence lived in La Grange Park, and then in Chicago on Naper Rd near Milwaukee and Devon (where the Big Dawg hot dog stand is and also near St. Adalbert Cemetery) and now she is in Aurora near my cousin Jim and my cousin Janice is in Naperville.

Dorothy Janca wrote in March 2011:Grandma lied. She was an 'old maid' I guess and didn't want to be older than her husband. St. Adabert cemetery marker is also wrong for her father because the marker was not put up until the mother died in the 30's. The sisters always said they were young when their Dad died. They tried to be consistent. St. Adalbert's sent me the burial date for Frank senior, April 1, 1902. Gramma's sisters lied on their marriage documents too because otherwise the older ones would have been born here and not in Bohemia. They are in Leo Baca's book-I forget which one.I think grandma used August 15th as a birthday a lot because it was her baptismal date. When you lie, it's hard to remember what you told to whom. Her tombstone here is totally wrong too. Maybe if she would have known that it kept her from getting social security at her real age of 65, she wouldn't have lied on every document. She even erased dates and rewrote them in the few books she had. There were at least 2 male children that died at an early age. One was John in 1903, with a twin Johanna who lived. They were born in 1900, April 15. Baby Frank who died here was born in Chrastov Aug 1889, and there is one unknown. The girls were Fanny (born 1882 in Chrastov), Aggie (1885 Chrastov), born here was Marie, Emma, and Johanna. The documents from the Czech archives are pretty clear. Oops, forgot aunt Sophie, also born here) Maybe the second male baby was born here and also named Frank. Maybe that is why I couldn't get a name, because they used Frank twice. I have a death date of Feb 28, 1891 for Frank. If the next baby was born October 1891, they probably just used the same name. I think you found my missing baby! The 1885 date threw me too; I am not sure they had to show any documentation at that time, maybe just their word. I think there was another relative by marriage of Frank Vichr--Jan or John Fantina. He was a witness on some document. Maybe he came 1885, and they just used that for everyone.Frank and Tomas' father was Bartholomej (Bartholomew) so that fits.So one of my 2 Vichr mysteries solved! Thank you Lori!Dorothy .... "Dorothy was responding to my email where I wrote:
Here is the 1900 census in case you don't have it. The last name is hard to read, but I found it in Heritage categorized under the name Vichr and it seems to be a match. Again, perhaps you have all these documents - but thought I'd send them in case they helped.
Differences here - 1900 census says they immigrated in 1885 but you have immigration as May 1890
Second issue is Marie's birth as what year??? She is born in Chicago:note, Marie is listed as born August 1890 but Marie does have a younger age on her marriage certificate saying she was 21 in May 1916 - the same age as her husband. That would make her born in 1895 though. Immigration was 1885-1890 and mom was pregnant with her?? That would make her older than Emma from the 1900 census. If immigration was in May 1890 and Josepha was pregnant with Marie - then it would make sense that her birth would have been August 1890.But. On Lucie's birth certificate for Feb 1917 Marie is again listed as 21. The Jan. 1920 census shows her as 24 years old or born 1895. Somehow she seems to stay with 1885 after the 1900 census. Error or did she not want to be older than her husband?? Who knows. Immigration is 1885 for 4 family members and the rest born in IL starting with Marie."
