==================
Patty Ronsani collected this:
Translation of writings from Czech to English from the book maintained by the late John Ouradnik by Clarence J. Ouradnik Jan (John) Ouradnik was born in the year 1845, the 27th day of December, of parents Frantisek (Francis) and Ana Ouradnik in the market town of Jankov, Circuit (County) of Tabor, Bohemia. There were of us children altogether six, three daughters and tree sons.
Our father, Francis, was twice married - with his first wife [Anna Pesek c1785] two daughters [Katarina (John) Stika 1815-1888] and one son, named Frantisek (Francis or Frank) [1818-1892 wife Katerina Cigarel]. With the second wife [Anna Sochor 1801-1875] he had also 3 children, namely one daughter, Mary [1840-1927 Mrs. Josef Stika-nephew of half sister Katerina] and the sons Josef [1842-1900 wife Katherina Marsicek], and John [1845-1936 wife Catharina Kalcik], who were of Jankov.
The half sister, Katherine [1815-1888], married Jan (John) Stika of Jankov. When talk began about America, John Stika decided to seek his fortune in America. He sold his belongings in the year of 1855 and set out for America. My brother Josef accompanied him, at only the age of 12 summers. [From Leo Baca Czech NY passenger list 1847-69 Vol. IV page 158 Johann Stika listed as 39 years old with wife Catharina 39, Maria 17, Joseph 14, Barbara 11, Anna 9, Catharine 7, Franz 3, Johann 1, Tankow on the Geo Williams, 1 Sept 1855].When they [John Stika family and Josef Ouradnik age 12] arrived in America, they travelled directly to the State of Wisconsin, Kewaunee County, where he (Stika) purchased whole sections of land and where he settled; where he started to cut out (clear) the forest so he could build some kind of shelter. From America to my parents he wrote that they should follow him, that he would give them 40 acres of land. Mother was very lonesome for her son Josef [1842-1900 then 12 years old] and often wept for him. Little wonder that in two years we followed them.There were of us at that time, a whole caravan - a long line of wagons when we traveled to Prague. From Prague we bid farewell to Czechia (Bohemia) and we traveled to the ocean. At Bremen we set sail aboard a sailing ship across the ocean. Six weeks passed before we arrived at the Promised Land. We travelled directly to the State of Wisconsin to Kewaunee County, Casco Town, where Stika was living.We were completely overcome (surprised) when we saw only a pure forest, in the middle a small shack, not a sign of cleared fields. Several families of us moved in so that the shack was crowded, but it was fortunate that there were plenty of wild pigeons. The men went into the woods and shot them; the women dressed and cooked them. Before long each one had to look around so that some kind of shelter could be provided before winter.
Everyone had to start with cutting the first tree so that there would be a clearing in which to build. Everywhere it was overgrown with thick forest growth. It was a heavy task for us youngsters - our parents were elderly - we were quite young. Josef was 14, I, Jan, was 12 summers of age, and sister Mary was 16 summers. But no matter, we had to hire help for the few remaining dollars, which was not much.We had a neighbor, Jan (John) Opicka who came to America with us. We hired him and he helped us finish a building. Then we cleared and burned the trees and in the spring we planted grain among the stumps which were everywhere. We dug and shopped with difficulty because of all the roots. What grain was harvested was pounded (ground) ay hom since there were no mills, those which were, were a long distance away, besides no one had any means of transportation, there were not any roads.At that time as land was developed, some kind of roads had to be laid out and moving draught (power) was needed, but none was available here. So usually the young men of the early settlers walked to some town or place where there was some work to be found and each one tried to earn enouch in several months to buy some oxen. My brother Josef brought home a pair of two year old oxen. There were not very strong, but it was something. When they grew stronger and roads were starting to take shape, we began to peel bard from logs and hauled the timber to the railroad which was being built to the city of Kewaunee. Some went to work in the saw mill to earn a few dollars so there so there wasn't such a shortage of money. I also went to the saw mill to earn a few dollars and looked around for some land. An Irishman, Patrick Smith, had some land he desired to sell so I bought from him, putting down some money, and remained owing for the rest. I went back to the sawmill to earn more money and paid off the balance.
Then the war began in 1861 and lasted until 1865. Who wished, could join the army; those who stayed home could earn more, everybody paid well because there were few people left at home. Too many had gone to the army. Banks began to collapse and people were afraid to hold money.
Then I married and moved onto my own land in the year 1865 -- 24th day of September.Jan Ouradnik in the year 1882 was elected Town Treasurer for the Town of Pierce, which was held for one year - when the townships were divided. Our town received the name of Casco Town. Then I was elected the town Treasurer for consecutive terms from 1896 to 1889. Then I was elected Town Chairman in 1891 and was re-elected for three consecutive terms in 1894. I was again elected Chairman from 1895 to 1896; again from 1897 to 1898.
January 3, 1894 I purchased the farm from JAN STICKA for the sum of 1600 dollars, $1550 for the land and $50 for machinery. Altogether 80 acres.
Josef Ouradnik passed away suddenly on the 22nd day of December, 1900. On December 21st with his son Aloys they drove into the woods for firewood. There they observed deer tracks so he took his musket and took out after the deer and wounded him so that the deer ran about 8 miles before he was able to bring him down. He could not manage to bring him in that day so he left him there and they next day he went after him along with his son Aloys. When they dragged it to the sleigh, he was taking the musket out of the of the sleigh and was going to put it on the seat, he touched the trigger and a shot rang out. The slug went through his left hand, check and though his neck. He gasped about twice and there was no further possibility of life. He was laid to rest in the cemetery at Beroun, MN.My father, Frantisek Ouradnik, was born in the town of Jankov, Votichem circuit, near Tabor in Czechia (Bohemia), in the year 1780 and died in 1866. My mother was born Ana Ouradnik in the year 1804 and died in 1875. They are at rest in the cemetery in Slovan, Town of Casco, Kewaunee County, WI.
(Jan Ouradnik)

Mrs. Walecka was one of the early pioneer women and had seen her home town develop into the garden spot of the county from a primitive forest. She was a Christian mother strong in her faith, her life wrapped up in the welfare of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was withal a good mother, a kind neighbor and friend all of whom will rise up and call her blessed.
