# Note: BIOGRAPHY: Enthusiastic reports from the Sticka and Gregor families already settled in Kewaunee County led Joseph (48) and his wife (34) Anna (Pohan) Koss to leave the small village of Svata Barbora, Bohemia for America. The reports told of fertile land available for little money and described America as a paradise. One letter told of sugar lumps floating down the river, not explaining that they were actually chips from a sugar maple tree.
Embarking on the unknown with four children, Antonia (11), Frank (9), Joseph (7), and Anna (4) would be challenge enough, but Anna (Pohan) Koss was pregnant. Anton was born aboard ship during the Atlantic crossing. Families with them were the Jalinecs and the Chapeks.
They arrived in Kewaunee in September of 1858 after a tiresome Lake Michigan voyage. They probably came by ship through the Great Lakes from Buffalo, New York as did many immigrants. The fare to a Lake Michigan port was from $7 to $10. Anna was so impressed with the enormous potatoes and vegetables displayed by a farmer on the dock that she decided they must have land such as that which produced so well. They did just that, purchasing 80 acres in the Town of Casco from Joseph Walenta, the vegetable grower. (He later changed his name to Joseph Walender.)
The first private ownership of this land was acquired by Edwin W. Crawford. He purchased the NE 1/4 of section 3, consisting of approximately 170 acres at 50 cents per acre. September 3, 1857, he sold it to Joseph Walenta at an unrecorded price. Approximately a year later, September 6, 1858, Walenta sold the west half of the NE~1/4 to Joseph and Anna Koss. They paid $500 for about 85 acres.
