Winnipeg, Canada connection

Agnes Hallama commissioned some research into the ancestry of her Blahnik family in 2012 and has added two more ancestral generations with Simon and Jakub.  She had provided the information from Jakub Blahnik 1776 previously from her research.

The Blahnik family had been millers since the late 1500's at U Blahniku just east of Chodsko Lhota along the Andelice River.  Ladislav Blahnik wrote an article on the History of Millcraft in Bohemia which mentions our family mills.  The Winnipeg Blahniks remained in the area for the longest period of time for all immigrant Blahnik Branches.

Oct 2003 Update by Agnes Hallama.
Roy Rushka contributed the following Frank Blahnik family.  Information about web site and books.  http://www.chodovepeople.com/

(Possible relation : The family tree constructed by Ladislav Blahnik going back to the 1400's shows  Jan (X1) Blahnik born at Blahnik's Mill #87.  This was likely U Blahniku.  Jan and his wife Ursula had 4 documented children.
-Jan (XI1) Blahnik born 1756 and married Katerina Mercora
-Katerina (XI2) Blahnik born Jan 12, 1857
-Dorota (XI4) Blahnik born Feb. 24, 1759
-Jan (XI3) Blahnik born 1758 and married to Dorota in 1785.  They had 8 children below:

Jakub (XII1) Blahnik b May 10, 1786
Jan (XII2) Blahnik b. February 12, 1789
Anna (XII3) Blahnik b January 11, 1792

Barbara (XII4) Blahnik b. December 02, 1794
Dorota (XII5) Blahnik b. October 15, 1797
Marie (XII6) Blahnik b. January 23, 1800
Josef (XII7) Blahnik b. March 13, 1804
Katerina (XII8) Blahnik b. June 21, 1806)

The Blahnik family had mills back in the1600's.  In 2011 Joel Blahnik wrote:

Everyone---Agnes has roots to the Blahniks Mills--the Hallama family married into Blahnik from these mills. I have known Agnes for a long time and she is very knowledgeable. She also speaks Czech well. She has been to this area several times in the past.  The state of one of these mills today is a summer cottage for wealthy German family who comes over the border---but they have repaired one very nicely.  Agnes has had good contact with the "Busek family" who lived in this "U Blahniky" house. I have and spoken with them. One family I think is now in Canada, and I think now the last Busek would know.

Author's note: Ladislav had located two Blahnik families at Blahnik's mill but at that time did not know how those branches related.

Blahnik family location map

Agnes and Mildred Hallama at the 2011 International Blahnik Reunion at the Blahnik Heritage park in Algoma, WI Aug 20th
This map shows 4 known immigrant families of Blahniks from SE of Domazlice, Czech Republic - families to still be connected.

Agnes knew
Mary Blahnik Svaiger in Gogebic, MI with the Ashland/MI Blahnik family.  She was the daughter John Blahnik and Mary Hallama.  Agnes believes there probably is a family connection.

Notes for JOHN (JOHANN) BLAHNIK:

Hi Lori:  Thanks for the two emails and your thoughts.  I have had a Census check on #89 u Blahniku a couple of years ago.  The census does not exist before 1869 and had it done for that year.  In that Census only Adam Blahnik and his wife are mentioned and their children.  Which doesn't tell me who his father was.  I was going to contact Zdenek Blahnik once he is back home and see if he could recommend anyone who would search the records for that Blahnik family.  None of my current cousins over there are interested in this.

In that 1869 Census two of Adam's children were Wensl and Jan (John) that's why I'm thinking that someone in Wisconsin must be descendants .  The birth dates I have for them from the Census don't match the ones I saw in Wisconsin.  My other thought is:  My ggrandfather Tomas was the oldest oldest son so naturally he would have got the home place.

The two younger brothers would have moved somewhere else to work or farm or came across to America so not necessarily they would be from "u Blahniku".  We just find it so strange that my grandmother never talked about aunts or uncles and from the census they all lived in that house, before she was born, but still surely the father would have kept in touch with his siblings.  Just very strange indeed.  I may never find out the rest of the history on that family.

8/26/2011Dear Lori...

My grandmother was married here in Winnipeg.  She was 21 years old when she came.  My grandfather was looking for a wife and the only women in the area at the time were of Aboriginal decent (Metis we call them).  It was suggested to him that he would be better off with someone of his own ethnic background.  So my grandfather wrote to his older brother to see if he knew of someone who would like to come over and be his wife.  The sister-in-law was a good friend to my grandmother Barbara so she suggested that they should approach her father and the rest is history.  My grandmother came from a "better off" family so coming to this wilderness was quite the challenge.  Her first home was a log cabin on the river bank.  When it rained she had to put pots all over to catch the leaky roof.  She lost her first two children , one was still born the other lived ten days so talk about hardship.  She was a lovely, caring grandmother and she just adored us three children as that's all she had.  She died when she was 80 years old so lived to a good age despite all the hardships.  -Agnes Hallama

Notes for ANNA BLAHNIK:  8/26/2011  Hi Lori:

I forgot to leave one picture with you, it must have been on the other side of the folder I had.  The picture was of Anna Blahnik (Kveton) Busek).  She was the youngest of my grandmother's siblings and remained on the home place u Blahniku.  Her first husband went in WW1 and was killed soon after joining.  She was pregnant with her daughter Maria.  The then married I don't know how long after a Vaclav Busek and they had four more children.  That picture of her is with a granddaughter that I left with you.  The grave site is for both the Blahnik and Busek families.  The custom there is the grave site remains in the family.  If it's a girl then they will take her married name.  On this tombstone its nice that they left the Blahnik name on it.  My great grand parents on the Hallama side are buried in the same cemetary but it does not have that name any more.  Again, it was a daughter who remained on the home place and her married name was put on the tombstone.  When I was in the CR on my first visit in 1961 the tombstone still have Halama on it so I took a picture which is a nice souvenir for me.  I will scan you the picture of Anna Blahnik and her family.  The youngest child wasn't born yet so don't know what year that would be in but I will look through my stuff that I have and see if I can come with a close date...  Agnes Hallama
