FEB. 8 - OBITUARIES AND FUNERALS
Blahnik, Wenzel F.
Wenzel F. Blahnik, 87, 1500 State St., Algoma, died Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2001 at the Algoma Long Term Care Unit. He was born Sept. 12, 1913 in the Town of
Ahnapee to the late Anton and Clara (Schneider) Blahnik. Wenzel attended St. Mary's Grade School. He helped on the home farm and later took it over. On
Sept. 28, 1937 Wenzel married Dorothy Jirtle at St. Mary's Church, Algoma. The couple ran the farm and in 1947 they started the custom slaughter house and meat cutting business on the farm. They farmed until the barn burned down in 1962. Wenzel then worked at Badger Northland and helped Dorothy out at the Sears Store in Algoma. The couple also opened the Blahnik's Campgrounds. Wenzel enjoyed and was very involved in the Blahnik Family Geneology until a
couple of years ago when his health made him give it up. In his younger days he enjoyed playing the accordion.
Wenzel is survived by his wife Dorothy of 63 years; one son Donald (Marilyn) Blahnik, Algoma and Florida; one daughter Evelyn (Paul) Brookhyser, Newport, Ore.; six grandchildren, Jay Blahnik, Scott Blahnik, Deborah (Lawrence) Bouche, Anne, Erica and James Brookhyser; five great-grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by parents and one sister, Barbara Shestock.
Friends may call at the SCHINDERLE FUNERAL HOME, ALGOMA, from 4-8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 9, and after 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary's Church, Algoma until  time of the Mass at 11 a.m. with Father Bill Kuhr officiating. March 5, 2010
Blahnik, Dorothy M.
Dorothy M. Blahnik, 92, Algoma, died Tuesday, March 2, 2010, at the Algoma Long Term Care Unit. She was born in Sturgeon Bay on May 16, 1917, to Elmer and Esther (Olson) Jirtle. Dorothy graduated from the Sturgeon Bay High School and attended the Door-Kewaunee County Normal School. She worked at St. Vincent Hospital as a receptionist for one year.
Dorothy married Wenzel Blahnik in Algoma, on Sept. 28, 1937. They ran Wenzel's home farm where he grew up and then in 1947, they started the custom meat cutting business on the farm and did that until the barn burned down in 1962. Dorothy owned and operated the Sears Catalog store in Algoma for 16 years. After selling the store she enjoyed quilting and wall hangings and giving them as gifts. She was also a former 4-H leader for many years, she took phone calls on the Violence Intervention Help Line and did transportation for the Community Programs Services. Dorothy and Wenzel sponsored a Polish family of four through a church that came from a displaced person camp. Over the years Wenzel and Dorothy took in many people to help them through a difficult time in their life.
She is survived by one son, Donald (Marilyn) Blahnik, Algoma and Florida; one daughter, Evelyn (Paul) Brookhyser, Newport, Ore.; six grandchildren, Jay (Diana) Blahnik, Scott (Penny) Blahnik, Deborah (Lawrence) Bouche, Anne (Brad Alstrom), Erica (Keith Kirchoff) and Jim (Laurel) Brookhyser; six great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two brothers, Roger and Elmer Jirtle; one sister, Pearl Seiloff; and Henry Wierichs who was raised by her family.

See Blahnik Heritage Park page.  Evelyn (Blahnik) Brookhyser donated 23 acres of land she inherited from her father Wenzel F. Blahnik (son of Anton).  Wenzel purchased the land with the hopes of having it become a park someday.  Evelyn and her husband Paul made that possible in for him in 2008.
