RICHARD
JOSEPH7 BLAHNIK FRANK
JOHN6,
GEORGE5,
GEORG4,
GEORGIUS3,
JACOBUS2,
WENCESLAUS1 was born February 14, 1904 in Algoma, WI
(Source: Kewaunee Co Records -Births, Vol 1, page 254.), and died February 24,
1981 in Neenah, WI (Source: Winnebago County Records Deaths, vol 144 pg 534.).
He married MELVA ROSE
LONDRE July 08, 1924 in Neenah, WI St. Mary's Church, daughter of HUBERT
LONDRE and HOSANNA
VENNE. She was born June 12, 1909
in Dunbar, WI, and died April 21, 1990 in Neenah, WI (Source: Winnebago County
Records deaths, vol 144 pg 534.). Second photo shows Dick's
wife (Melva) Rose Londre and his sister Beatrice Blahnik.
Richard was
blonde with pale blue eyes. His hair turned brown as he got older.
Richard was born
in Algoma and appears in the 1905 census at that location. By 1910 the
family lived in DePere, WI. He only attended school through the 4th grade
but was intelligent and artistic. Dick made guitars and played them.

Richard, age 20, Textile industry, son of Frank Blahnik and Mary Holub
Rose Landre, 15, daughter of Hubert Landre and Rose Venne.
Rose Londre
was the oldest daughter from French-Canadian bloodlines. She had Auburn hair
and hazel eyes and was short.
Dick and Rose's
first children was a set of identical twins. June Rose and Jeanette Marie
were born August 15, 1925 at 135 Union Street, Neenah, WI. Jeanette
Marie
died September 28, 1925. Her
Obituary as written in The Daily News-Times, Neenah, WI Sept 28, 1925.
Cause of death was malnutrition due to entero-colitis.
Death Certificate says she was buried at St.
Pat's Cemetery but the newspaper says she died at Theda Clark Hospital in Neenah
and would be buried at Oak Hill Cemetery. It was an unmarked grave and the
cemetery had lost the records for her by the year 2000 when researched. Kessler's
funeral home in Neenah has the record for her buried at Oak Hill..
INFANT DIES AT
LOCAL HOSPITAL THIS MORNING
Janet Marie Blahnik, five-weeks-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Blahnik,
Union street, Neenah, did at Theda Clark hospital this morning. Funeral services
will be held at 10 o'clock Tuesday morning at St. Patrick's church with Rev. Fr.
G. A. Clifford officiating. Burial will take place at Oak Hill cemetery.
June Rose
Blahnik was the older of the twins and she died January 08, 1926 and was
also buried in an unmarked grave at Oak Hill Cemetery. Records for the
burial were lost for
its location as well. The twins were not buried next to each other, but a
short distance apart and close to a small road. One was next to a marker
for "Baby Bodway". This stone is no longer in the cemetery. Highway 41 was built
through this area in the1960's and Dick always claimed the highway was paved
over their graves. We have no idea what actually happened.
June's death was reported in the Appleton Post-Crescent | Appleton, Wisconsin |
Friday, January 08, 1926 | Page 10 and her
death certificate shows
convulsions as the cause of death.
Rose said that she
had found the child cold and brought her to bed with her. When she woke up, the
child was dead. The family lived at 529 Van Street,
Neenah at the time of Junes death.
Richard and Rose
moved to Racine, WI where Rose had some family. They lived
at 512
Ashland Avenue, Racine where
their daughter Bette Jane Blahnik August 23, 1926. On July 23, 1927
their son Richard Jr. was born. Richard Jr. died on December 11, 1927 and
is buried in Racine. In 1928 the family lived briefly in Algoma, WI before moving
back to Appleton, WI on
Spencer Street where their daughter, Joyce Blahnik was born on
August 20, 1930. This was after the great stock market crash known as "Black
Tuesday" in October 1929. In 1931 they were on South Douglas Street
in Appleton. They next moved to a small apartment
above a College Ave store, and when Dick couldn't work the family of 4 lived in
a small one bedroom apartment
above Dick's parents at 214 Main St. in Neenah. Finally when Dick
returned to work he began building a
house completely by hand on 1727 W. Winnebago Street. Rose's father was a carpenter
and she knew how to write and read blueprints. The family lived at
203 E. Hancock while Dick built the new house 1935-36. In 1936 they moved
into this house but the marriage did not last. Rose moved with the children back
to her family in Racine. On November 05, 1937 the couple divorced.
Rose would go on to marry Frank J. Frye, but Dick never remarried.
Dick
and Rose dealt with many problems as a young couple. They had 3 of their 5
children die in infancy and then suffered through the Great Depression.
Times were hard and often Rose's brothers would ride under the trains from
Racine to stay with Dick and Rose while they looked for work. Dick
had been employed at the Kimberly Clark mill but after having a large roller
crush the arch of his foot, he was unable to work for a while. There were
no insurance or disability programs at this time. His wife did sewing from
their home to
bring in money. To add to all of this uncertainty, Dick would 'disappear'
and not come home for days, weeks or months. There was always uncertainty about whether
he would return. He would suddenly show up at home again and act as
if nothing had happened. The instability from all of these things caused a great deal of stress
for the family and Rose eventually divorced.
Dick
continued to
lived at the home he built on Winnebago Street until he was drafted in WWII.
Because of the divorce he was considered an unmarried male and was drafted. He
was 39 years old at that time but the war effort was calling many people to
service. He was listed as being 5'7" with a ruddy complexion. Dick was
posted at Camp Livingston in Louisiana. In 1943, Dick's father died, he was
able to return home to care for his mother and return to Kimberly Clark making
paper products that were used in the War effort. He took over the mortgage
payments and lived at 214 Main Street in Neenah for the rest of his life.
1944
Neenah, WI City Directory,
Dick lived with his mother and operated an
Ice Cream stand on Main Street in front of
their house.
Dick
had purchased some land along Boom Bay on Lake Poygan, Winnebago Co, WI
and in 1950 he began building a single floor building from the same plans he
used to construct his home at 1727 W. Winnebago St in Appleton. At the
time people were allowed to fill in the low lying lands along the shore and he
brought car loads of dirt and rocks after work on a regular basis. The
cottage was completed June 20, 1951 at 7704 Cut Off Lane. In 1953 he
had somewhat of a 'nervous breakdown' and voluntarily hospitalized himself for about a month.
Dick never got over the deaths of his children, his and divorce and he was
depressed/drinking
heavily.
Photo was taken at
the cottage in 1959 showing Dick, his mother Marie and his daughter
Bette. Bette's children are also shown. Back row: Jayne Spilman,
Bette (Blahnik) Spilman, Marie Blahnik. Front Tom, Dee, Richard Blahnik, and
Lori Spilman. Richard supported his mother until her death in 1968.
His mother was about 5'1'" and Dick purposely made the kitchen counters and
cupboards low so that she could easily reach them for cooking. Dick
enjoyed duck hunting, fishing, loved polka bands and dancing.
Dick Blahnik died Feb 24, 1981
at 77 years of age. His
death Certificate shows he
was the son of Frank Blahnik and Marie Holub and born on Feb. 14, 1904. He
died at Theda Clark Hospital in Neenah from a G.I. Hemorrhage and
Cardio-respiratory Failure. Contributing factors were Cirrhosis of the
Liver and Diabetes Mellitus. He was buried at St. Margaret Cemetery next
to his mother. He had worked at Kimberly Clark Atlas Mill as a Millwright.
